Strong Points

Very quick and explosive off the ball. Stays low and is powerful. Can anchor and never gives ground to a blocker plus he is consistently able to get penetration and be disruptive. Has an all-out motor and plays hard every play. Is improving as a pass rusher, can use his hands and put moves together. Has 14 sacks over the last two seasons from inside.

Weak Points

Is a bit on the short side (but long arms make up for his short stature). Can drop his head and lose sight of the ball at times. Will lose leverage on occasion. Has scheme limitations.

The Way We See It

Rankins is a fun guy to watch on tape because he plays so hard. While he is short, he has length and good hand use which overcomes his short stature. He is quick and explosive with very good power and body control. Is disruptive in the run game and will chase the ball. Is an efficient and effective pass rusher who consistently gets sacks and QB pressures. His best fit is as a 3-technique in a 4-3, but he can also play a 0 or 1 tech in a 4-3. Is too short to play at the %-tech but may be able to play some nose in a few off from defenses. Will most likely be selected in the second half of the first round.
