Strong Points

Very good safety size. Really aggressive player who likes to hit. Smart and instinctive zone defender. Doesn't make the same mistake twice. Said to be a vocal team leader. Matured after his problems at Georgia.

Weak Points

Originally enrolled at Georgia and was dismissed from the team for some off-field issues. Tightness in his hips and lacks a smooth turn. Has trouble matching up in man against wide receivers because of his tightness. Lacks really good top-end speed. Injury history includes labrum surgery on both shoulders.

The Way We See It

A fifth-year senior and a transfer from Georgia. Started six games for the Bulldogs as a true freshman but was dismissed from the team because of off-field issues. Transferred to Auburn and sat out 2014. Was a three-year starter at Auburn. More of a box safety than the type who can play deep. Has awareness in zone but lacks the hips and suddenness to match up in man. Strong run-support player and a solid tackler. If he can get to 220 pounds, Matthews might be better off as a hybrid linebacker. If not, he's a backup at strong safety with the traits to be a core special-teams guy. Day Three selection with a strong chance to make the 53.
