DFS Week 5: Where watching the books helps

Last Updated:

In general, I start each DFS week with what the sportsbooks in Las Vegas have to say.

If the professionals that make a living at this have an idea of how many points will be scored in a game and which team should be the favorite, then it's not a bad place to start with roster construction in DFS.

But the Vegas lines should be followed throughout the week, and Week 4 was a perfect example of that. The Cowboys-Rams game opened in the mid-40s, with the Cowboys favored by 7.5 points. Within 48 hours, the over/under climbed to 48, with the line coming down to Dallas favored by six points.

What should that tell you? That a bunch of sharp bettors felt the game would not only be a shootout, but it would be close.

The result? Rams 35, Cowboys 30.

Onto the plays...

High: Aaron Rodgers ($8,100 DraftKings/$9,500 FanDuel): You can play Rodgers without stacking a WR with him this week.

Mid: Eli Manning ($6,100 DraftKings/$7,000 FanDuel): The Giants pass the ball more than any team in the league.

Low: DeShone Kizer ($5,500 DraftKings/$6,900 FanDuel): His running keeps his floor high.

Running Back

High: Le'Veon Bell ($9,500 DraftKings/$9,500 FanDuel): Don't be scared off by the Jaguars. Jacksonville has the No. 32 DVOA rush defense.

Mid: Christian McCaffrey ($5,700 DraftKings/$6,200 FanDuel): The Panthers offense looked legit at New England, and McCaffrey's role in the offense is set.

Low: Andre Ellington ($4,600 DraftKings/$5,400 FanDuel): Ellington saw 14 targets a week ago and will need to play a role against the Eagles.

Wide Receiver

High: A.J. Green ($8,200 DraftKings/$8,300 FanDuel): Green is matchup-proof and the Bills defense allows plenty of yards.

Mid: Dez Bryant ($6,500 DraftKings/$7,800 FanDuel): Dez is the No. 1 WR play on the board this week for me after getting through a murderer's row of DBs to start the season. Jam him in.

Low: Travis Benjamin ($4,000 DraftKings/$5,200 FanDuel): In a game that should feature plenty of passing, Benjamin should see at least five or six targets.

Tight End

High: Zach Ertz ($6,200 DraftKings/$6,600 FanDuel): Arizona funnels targets away from Patrick Peterson, and Peterson won't be on Ertz.

Mid: Austin Seferian-Jenkins ($3,500 DraftKings$5,500 FanDuel): Cleveland is a slump-busting team for tight ends.

Low: Hunter Henry ($3,800 DraftKings/$5,200 FanDuel): And though Cleveland is bad, the Giants might be worse. Fire up Henry with confidence.
